Due diligence for family office client for Silicon Valley investment

I work with an offshore trustee advising on the liquid portfolio of one UK family member’s trust. The beneficiary came to the trustee with an investment opportunity outside of our mandate to take part in a fund-raising effort for $20m growth capital for a tech company in Silicon Valley. The trustee did not have the in-house expertise to validate the opportunity and so we offered our services at zero cost. From a standing start, I turned the due diligence around in a few days in order to provide the trustee and the beneficiary with an extensive report detailing the company’s industry overview, underlying business model, funding history, comparison with parallel public and private companies and research on the management team. Not only did this equip the trustee and beneficiary with the information needed to make their investment decision but served as a great training tool for the beneficiary on how to approach the direct investment conversation and a framework for due diligence in the future.
