Peer review:

James was highly articulate in a very hostile media climate following the Panama Papers. While many others ducked any kind of response to the misinformed stereotypes in the media, James articulated some simple truths benefiting all of us who work in the area. James’s contribution merits respect and recognition.

Peer review:

I have worked with James on numerous tax-related matters (typically involving trusts) over a long period of time and he provides highly reliable advice to our clients and has the ability to explain complex revenue law points in a clear and succinct manner. His advice is always practical and to the point which is appreciated and he is enjoyable to have on board as part of an advisory team, showing tremendous rapport with clients and colleagues alike. His work ethic and turnaround on advice is admirable and I have no hesitation in recommending him to others.

Peer review:

James is an ideal advisor to trustees. He combines speed and acuity of thought, lateral thinking and pragmatism all grounded in excellent technical knowledge. He finds solutions and has the communication skills to articulate difficult points and to make them understandable to clients and colleagues in implementing his plans. All these skills were publically exemplified in his media work arising from first the Panama and then the Paradise Island papers, cutting through a fog of misinformation and hostility to the considerable benefit of the international financial community. James combines his technical abilities with a great sense of humour and a winning personality. He is a pleasure to work with.

Peer review:

I am a professional trustee and I have worked with James on various matters for almost 10 years. In my experience James is an excellent private client lawyer who has a particular specialism in international tax and estate planning. He is also particularly strong on matters surrounding international tax transparency. James is renowned for his clear communication style and has an excellent manner with his clients. His outstanding knowledge of the tax legislation in the UK coupled with his communication skills mean that he has a very impressive ability to demystify even the most complicated of matters for his clients. Recently James has deservedly received national media exposure as a result of his defence of David Cameron's fathers tax affairs in the Panama Papers. He has become one of the UK's leading tax specialists and is regularly invited to speak on national media whenever tax is in the headlines.

Structuring UK property holdings worth £164 million

I have been instructed to advise the client on how to structure and manage his UK property holdings accumulated over a number of years. Much of the client's portfolio is invested in 'shop and flats' mixed use properties through offshore vehicles so has been particularly affected by the proposed changes to inheritance tax from April 2017. I have advised the client on undertaking a multi-stage restructuring of their family trust and revising this advice as new laws are proposed. I am now assisting the client on transferring assets to the next generation while protecting him from any misapplication of those assets by his children. The UHNW individual involved has a UK property portfolio worth £164 million.
