Landed estates and The Agriculture Bill
Paula Steele, director of John Lamb Hill Oldridge is of this opinion “The future of the UK’s landed estates is more uncertain than it’s ever been. The impact of Covid19, coupled with potential tax changes, has created a bleak outlook”.

Managing financial up and down cycles for wealthy clients
Lady Client aged 80, with a house near Cambridge with equestrian business attached and shares in family business, the brief to provide client with £200,000 for variety of projects. To mitigate inheritance tax- solution in conjunction with client’s other advisers split the title on the equestrian business so that an equity release could be taken on the house to fund variety of projects. The equestrian business restructured to qualify for business relief. Shares in family company restructured so that non-qualifying cash is released, and company shares now qualify for business relief. Client has achieved £200,000 for her projects and IHT reduced right over £750,000.a
One of my clients has had a long-standing relationship with me, and I handled his pensions, investments outside of the business and inheritance tax planning. We were involved in helping the client to prepare the business, a high risk property development firm, for sale in 2007 for a price in excess of £50m. Unfortunately the sale collapsed with difficult markets and the client had financial problems because of high levels of debt and low cash flow. We assisted by helping him withdraw all funds in his pension fund which because of significant losses in his business meant there was no tax to pay, and supported him and his wife through a very difficult time. He managed to turn the business around and this year will return to significant profit. We have also now acquired his wife and two children as clients.
