New York’s wealthy start planning early in election year
The domestic wealthy in New York are focused on the looming election later this year and as a result, workflows are soaring.
Stephanie Heilborn says: “Domestic work has been extremely busy and probably will continue to be so because we have a Presidential election coming up in November. The potential for changes to the tax laws is already driving people to do planning. For example, under the current US law we have a very high exemption from estate and gift taxes that is in place until the end of 2025, but with a change in administration, that exemption could decrease in 2021. People are thinking about how they can use that exemption and do planning in 2020 to take advantage of that before it potentially gets taken away.”

We represent a notable NY and London based restaurateur who has been active in the New York City restaurant scene for 30 years.
Our client has complex tax issues as a US greencard holder and UK citizen who spends time, and has businesses in, both countries. Currently, we are planning to restructure several entities to avoid UK income taxation on US businesses in light of changing UK domicile rules which affect UK citizens with businesses abroad. The fact that our client has a business partner also complicates the tax structuring.
We also advise on their intellectually property matters, including domestic and international trademark registrations.
