Peer review:

I have worked with Stephanie on a number of transatlantic matters. Her advice is clear and innovative when then there is a need to deviate from normal US practice. She has a sufficient understanding to issue spot on UK points and knows when additional advice is needed. Our mutual clients have always found her approachable and she provides explanations in a client friendly manner. This is such an important skill in what is an incredibly complex area of law. Would highly recommend.

Tax minimization for UK Trust with US beneficiary

I am currently working on behalf of a US citizen client who is a beneficiary of a UK trust. Because of the way that the Trust was written and the differences between US and UK trust and tax law, when the trust terminates in a couple of years, the entire trust could be subject to US tax on undistributed net income, leaving nothing to be distributed to the US beneficiary. In addition, UK IHT may also apply if the US beneficiary does not survive to the termination of the Trust. I am coordinating with UK counsel for the trustee to find a solution that will result in the minimum amount of US and UK tax to provide the best net benefit to the Trust beneficiaries.
